Do I Need a Face Lift or a Neck Lift?

Signs of aging can affect several areas of the body, including the neck and face. As we grow older, the skin can start to sag and wrinkle due to the loss of elastin and collagen. Cosmetic plastic surgery can address these issues and give individuals a younger, healthier, more rejuvenated appearance.

Dr. Steven Wiener performs facelift and necklift procedures at our Scottsdale, AZ, practice. Both treatment options effectively reduce the signs of aging. But which one is right for you? Here, we will discuss the face lift vs. neck lift procedure so our patients can be well-informed about potential treatment options.

A Closer Look at Facelift Surgery

One common misconception is that a facelift addresses the entire face. In reality, it targets the lower portion of the face – from the cheeks downward. During a facelift, incisions are created in front of and behind the ear to tighten and smooth the skin around the cheeks, mouth, and jawline. To achieve this effect, the skin is typically pulled gently back and upwards toward the forehead.

In most cases, a facelift takes about two to five hours to complete. It is performed as an outpatient procedure under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Recovery takes about two weeks.

Who Can Benefit from a Facelift?

Our Scottsdale team may recommend a facelift for patients who wish to reduce or eliminate excess skin and fat in the mid or lower portions of the face. It can also smooth wrinkles and tighten underlying muscles around these areas.

To qualify for a facelift procedure, patients must have realistic expectations about the procedure and be free from any health issues that could complicate recovery. Candidates should also be non-smokers, as tobacco products seriously interfere with healing. Most individuals who undergo facelifts are between 35 and 65 years of age.

About Neck Lifts

As its name implies, a neck lift targets areas around the neck and under the chin. During a neck lift, the underlying muscles along the neck and jawline are tightened and the soft tissues and skin are pulled taut and sutured into place.

Similar to a facelift, a neck lift can be completed in less than five hours. Recovery time generally takes about 10 to 14 days.

When Is a Neck Lift Recommended?

Individuals who have sagging skin around the jowls and neck may be able to benefit from a neck lift procedure. When describing what makes them dissatisfied with their appearance, patients often refer to a “turkey neck.” A neck lift can address these issues.

Like facelift surgery, neck lift candidates should be in good overall health and should not have any medical condition that could interfere with the body’s natural healing process. They should also have a clear idea of the results they want to achieve and be able to communicate their desires to the surgeon in detail.
